White Fillings
Cleveland, Ohio
One of the many advances in dentistry these days is all the options for filling cavities. In the “old” days, metal, or amalgam, fillings were the only choice for restoring a cavity-ridden tooth. At Cohn Dental Clinic, conveniently located in South Euclid, we offer white (metal-free) fillings made from either resin composite or porcelain.
Advantages of White Fillings
- Metal-free white fillings match the color of your natural teeth and are hardly noticeable.
- White fillings do not contain mercury, which can be hazardous to your health.
- White fillings actually strengthen the tooth by bonding to it.
- White fillings do not expand and contract with heat and cold like metal fillings so that means less threat to the tooth’s integrity.
- White fillings harden very quickly and that means less time in the dentist’s office.
White fillings are an excellent alternative to the old metal fillings and are longer-lasting. Dr. Cohn will replace metal fillings with either resin composite or porcelain fillings.
If you have old metal fillings that you’re concerned about or that need to be replaced anyway, please call or email our office today to schedule an appointment or free initial consultation. Dr. Cohn will evaluate your situation and let you know what the best course of action is for you. We look forward to meeting you soon!

At Cohn Dental Clinic, Inc., Dr. Cohn provides with cosmetic dentistry patients with the option of having their teeth whitened with the ZOOM teeth whitening system or special, custom take-home teeth whitening solutions.
By having your teeth whitening performed or provided by Dr. Cohn, you will be able to receive better results without the possible side effects of over-the-counter teeth whitening products. Dr. Cohn offer two different forms of teeth whitening treatments that can make your smile dazzling white. ZOOM is an in-office treatment that can be completed within an hour. Take home teeth whitening treatments include special tooth whitening gel that lightens teeth without damaging gums.
ZOOM is a light activated teeth whitening treatment that is fast, safe, and effective. During your ZOOM teeth whitening procedure, Dr. Cohn will apply a special teeth whitening gel to your teeth. Then, the ZOOM blue light is directed at the teeth whitening gel, activating the gel and breaking up deep stains in your teeth.
The ZOOM teeth whitening treatment is performed in three 15-minute sessions and is complete in just one hour. Zoom teeth whitening can lighten your teeth 6 to 10 shades whiter. You can easily fit ZOOM teeth whitening into you busy schedule to achieve a brighter smile.
Take-home teeth whitening treatments include custom made trays and teeth whitening gel that you use at night. Take-home teeth whitening can produce the same results as ZOOM in-office teeth whitening, but takes a longer amount of time.

Porcelain Fillings
Cleveland, Ohio
For more than 150 years, metal, or amalgam, fillings were the standard way of addressing cavities. While they are functional, there have been virtually no advances in metal fillings since their inception and there is some evidence that the mercury contained in them is dangerous to your health. Today if you need a filling, there are more choices. Dr. Cohn offers his patients white fillings and pearly-white porcelain fillings.
Types of Porcelain Fillings
Whereas metal fillings are compressed into the cavity tightly enough to keep them from falling out, porcelain fillings are bonded to the tooth, and become part of it. There are two types of porcelain fillings, inlays, and onlays. Inlays are smaller, and contained within the cusps of the tooth. Onlays are done for larger areas of decay and extend over to the outside surface of the tooth.
Advantages of Inlays and Onlays Over Metal Fillings
- Unlike metal fillings that are highly visible, porcelain fillings are color-matched to your natural tooth so they’re hardly noticeable. Both inlays and onlays will join invisibly with your natural tooth enamel and look like part of your tooth.
- With inlays and onlays, more of the natural tooth can be preserved. Metal fillings require more tooth tissue to be drilled out, even if it isn’t decayed, so that the space will be a good shape to hold the metal filling. Porcelain bonds directly to the tooth and doesn’t require as much of the natural tooth to be removed
- Metals fillings weaken the tooth because they expand and contract with the temperature of things in your mouth. Porcelain fillings strengthen the tooth, because they’re bonded to it and hold it together.
The Procedure
Porcelain fillings typically take two visits.
- The damaged or decayed area is removed and an impression, or mold, is taken of the tooth. The mold is sent off to one of the best dental labs in the country, which will custom-make the onlay or inlay from porcelain materials.
- Dr. Cohn will bond the inlay or onlay onto the damaged tooth. While this procedure sounds simple, it requires great skill to do it correctly, so it’s important to have a cosmetic dentist who is experienced and skilled with porcelain fillings.
If you need a new filling or you have old metal, fillings that need to be replaced and you live in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Call (216) 361-6000 or email the Cohn Dental Clinic today. Dental Crowns
Cleveland, Ohio
A dental crown is a cap used to cover a tooth that has a healthy root but is no longer structurally sound. If you live in the South Euclid area, Cohn Dental Clinic can help if you suspect you need a dental crown. Crowns are used when there is a crack in the surface of the tooth or too much tooth is missing for a regular filling. Crowns completely cover the visible area of a tooth, creating a brand new outer surface.
Types of Dental Crowns
There are three common types of crowns that we use in our offices:
- All-Porcelain Crowns – This type has the most natural appearance and is the most popular. Made from porcelain with a porcelain lining, it is almost indistinguishable from natural teeth. All-porcelain crowns are metal-free and durable, but capable of chipping if proper care is not taken.
- Gold Crowns – Gold crowns are appropriate when appearance is not a top priority and are mostly used on back teeth. They are durable and give a good chewing surface, but look starkly unlike natural teeth.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns – Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are both durable and have a very natural appearance when first placed. The metal lining adds strength. However, over time, a dark line may be visible at the gum line as gums recede, revealing the lining’s edge.
Dental Crown Procedure
Need to adjust the section for Cohn's abilith to do the procedure in the same day.
Each type of crown is placed basically the same way and there are two visits needed.
- Dr. Cohn will take an impression or mold of the affected tooth and send it to one of the best dental labs in the country where the crown will be custom-made for you.
He will fit a temporary crown until the permanent crown is placed about two weeks later. You and Dr. Cohn can discuss the color of the crown and the porcelain used to make it. it’s important for you to choose a qualified and experience cosmetic dentist who can match very closely the color of your crown to your surrounding teeth.
- Dr. Cohn attaches the dental crown. He will first fit it with a non-permanent cement, to insure that it is comfortable and the right color, size, and shape. If all is right, then permanent cement is applied, the crown placed on top and a special light used to cure, or harden, the cement.
If you live in the Greater Clevelalnd Area and have cracked, decayed or otherwise damaged teeth, please call or email us today to schedule a free initial consultation to see if dental crowns are the right solution for you. Letting already damaged teeth go untreated can cause further destruction to the surrounding teeth and bone.

Dental Implants
Cleveland, Ohio
For our South Euclid patients, Cohn Dental Clinic uses dental implants to replace one single tooth or a whole mouthful of teeth, effectively taking the place of removable dentures. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that provides an anchor for an artificial tooth (a crown). Unlike dentures or dental bridges, implants involve surgically placing one or more artificial tooth roots into the jawbone.
The Dental Implant Procedure
Under normal circumstances, dental implants can be placed and completed in three visits with waiting periods in between them. If there are active infections or decay, those will have to be addressed first.
- Dr. Cohn works closely with an oral surgeon who places the implant within the jawbone. It will need about four months, sometimes more, to fuse with the bone, a process known as osseointegration. This creates a strong foundation for the new tooth or teeth. Implants are made of titanium, a material that fuses well with bone.
- When the implant and bone are well fused, Dr. Cohn will do a second, more minor surgery, putting a small abutment on the top of the implant. This little piece will project above the gum tissue and hold the new porcelain crown. Healing after this step takes only two or three weeks.
- The new artificial tooth is permanently attached to the abutment on the implant. The final result is a new crown and strongly supported tooth that is color-matched to the surrounding teeth.
The porcelain crowns on your dental implants will look and feel like your natural teeth and you will be able to eat all your favorite foods like apples or corn on the cob, without worrying about your teeth moving or falling out.
Advantages of Dental Implants
There are other alternatives to replace missing teeth, such as dental bridges or dentures. However, implants have several advantages over other techniques:
- Dental implants are secure and durable
- They replace the tooth root as well as the tooth, preventing any bone resorption (shrinking)
- The crowns attached to the implants look like natural teeth – no one but you and your cosmetic dentist will ever know the difference
- The crowns can be cleaned and cared for much like natural teeth
- Other teeth are not disturbed in the process of placing implants
- With proper care, they will last the rest of your life
Am I a candidate?
You may be a candidate for dental implants if you have a missing tooth or teeth and are interested in a natural-looking lifetime solution. You should also meet the following criteria:
- Be in good health
- Do not smoke (smoking inhibits healing)
- Have healthy gums
- Have a large enough jawbone
- Do not have diabetes
- Have no bleeding disorder
- Have a strong immune system
During your consultation with Dr. Cohn, he will review your dental history and current health factors to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.
If you are bothered or embarrassed by missing teeth, call or email the staff at Cohn Dental Clinic in South Euclid today. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have and schedule a free initial consultation with Dr. Cohn. In just a few short months, you can have a complete and bright smile again with dental implants.

Laser Dentistry
Cleveland, Ohio
Use of lasers has transformed not only dentistry but the entire medical world. Lasers have many benefits, and there are a great many types of laser, each devised for a specific purpose. At Cohn Dental Clinic, Inc., we use lasers in cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry. We have both a soft tissue laser and a hard tissue laser. We use them to:
- Reshape teeth
- Reshape gums
- Remove tooth decay and bacteria
- Whiten Teeth
- Remove lesions
All laser dentistry is fast, precise, quiet, and virtually painless. You will have little or no bleeding because the laser seals tissue as it works on it. Because there is so little trauma to the body, you will have a fast recovery period. No infection will develop afterwards because the laser kills micro-organisms in the treatment area as it works. Because the laser is so precise, only the exact treatment area will be affected and nothing beyond
If, for instance, you have laser gum recontouring, the soft-tissue laser will vaporize tiny pieces of gum tissue according to a pre-determined plan. This will bring more of each tooth into view, so that your smile will look more full and balanced. You can leave our office after that treatment and resume normal activities immediately. In past years, such work was done with a scalpel and would have required pain medication and downtime from work and daily routines. Instead of a scalpel, Dr. Cohn uses the Co2 soft tissue laser much to the pleasure of his patients.
What is a laser?
It is a man-made device that delivers energy in the form of light. The light is not scattered, like ordinary incandescent light or car headlights. It travels in parallel beams and can be focused with extraordinary precision. Each laser vibrates at a specific wavelength, which corresponds to a color. Some are easily visible, such as the red laser in a classroom pointer. Some are invisible, vibrating at levels beyond our range of vision, and we call them infrared or ultraviolet lasers.
When a laser is used for surgical or dental work, it acts as a cutting instrument far more precise than any blade. It vaporizes the tissue it touches. There are lasers so hot they can vaporize their way through a block of steel, but those used on human tissue are much gentler.
Our use of lasers
-
When Dr. Cohn uses a laser, he is in complete control of it. He can set it according to the particular treatment he is doing, and since dental lasers have a very narrow beam, he can direct it to tiny crevices that might otherwise be hard to reach.
-
You might still need some local anesthetic, depending on what is being done, but not necessarily. A laser can be set to penetrate tissue at a given microscopic depth, and this can keep it away from any nerves or blood vessels.
-
In removing tooth decay, the laser will leave healthier tooth tissue in place than traditional drilling.
-
If you would normally feel your discomfort rising at the sound of a dental drill, the laser will leave you calm and relaxed.
-
If you have some small mis-matching between upper and lower teeth that does not require use of porcelain crowns or even dental bonding to correct, a laser can quickly remove tiny fragments of tooth to make your bite more smooth and comfortable.
If you are a person who particularly dreads seeing the dentist, please be assured that we understand that, and we will work hard to ease your fears. But in these days of advanced dental technology, there is no reason to fear visiting Dr. Cohn.
